    A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL

    July 8, 2020

    YES Families,

I hope that you were able to catch Superintendent Schuhler’s update last week regarding the opening of school in the fall.  We are still waiting on guidance from the state to determine which phase of reopening we will follow.  Our school leadership is working in tandem with district personnel to make sure we are ready for all three options.  You can learn more about the specific plans on the Franklin County Schools webpage.

As you know, we will follow the traditional school calendar for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.  A copy of that calendar can be found on our school webpage.  School is set to start for students on Monday, August 17.

No matter which phase of school opening we follow, remote learning will continue to be a part of our instructional program.  We learned valuable lessons during the spring that can be applied moving forward.  Our teachers and staff have participated and continue to participate in professional development that will increase our ability to deliver quality instruction remotely.  Our district has also committed to making sure that students have school devices that can be used for remote learning.  When students return in the fall, students in kindergarten and first grade will receive Ipads and students in grades 2-5 will be issued chromebooks that they can use at school and at home.

Franklin County Schools is offering a summer reading intervention program for students in grades K-4 called JumpStart.  It will begin on July 20 and end on August 7.  Teachers will work with students remotely using Google Classroom/Google Meet.  YES teachers have already reached out to eligible students.  If your child is participating in Jumpstart, you may pick up their device on Wednesday, July 15 from 9 am-12 pm or on Thursday, July 16 from 1-4 pm.   Parents must be present to sign the technology agreement and receive the device.  There is a $10 fee that can be paid via cash, check, or money order. Students must have a device through FCS.  Technology Hot Spots can be provided if needed at no cost.
