Geocaching - 21st Century
Treasure Hunting
A group of Franklin County children
have had quite an experience with modern-day treasure
hunting this week. Geocaching, which is the process of
finding items with a GPS based on latitude and longitude
coordinates, has grabbed the attention of the group. This is
the first camp of its kind offered by Franklin County
Schools. Campers explored the county Wednesday morning and
found several sites, including the one to the left that will
remain nameless. A typical Geocache may include simple items
that can be exchanged for others - or even a scroll to be
signed by those who have visited the site.

Engage Campers
If you had a chance to walk into the
FCS Robotics Camp at Laurel Mill Elementary School, it
wouldn't take you long to realize how much the children were
enjoying themselves. Students spent this week not just
learning about robotics, but building and programming their
very own functioning robots. The engaging camp is a
tradition with the FCS technology department and lasts a
full week each year. Many students return to the camp for
several years.

Former
Bunn High Valedictorian Still Shining
Kosha Tucker graduated from Bunn High
School in 2002 as the top-ranked student in her class. She
then attended Duke University on a full academic scholarship
and graduated with honor. The habit of high success
continues. Tucker
teamed up with Teach For America and began teaching
elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia after graduating as a
Blue Devil. Her compelling story
grabbed the attention of the Professional Golfers
Association and Wachovia for a prime spot in a TV
commercial. The commercial aired in late May, but you can

They Know When it is
Clean
Sixteen Franklinton High School
Advanced Foods students recently passed a national
sanitation test that is taught to restaurant managers. The
students endured a 90-question marathon to earn their
certification. If a restaurant has a manager or any employee who is
certified in this area, it gets an automatic two-point bonus
on its sanitation grade. FHS teacher Maria Styers said that
the results were "incredible" and she is extremely proud of
her students. Passing this exam is a strong point on a
resume.

Whole Faculty Study Groups Make a
Difference
Non-Core teachers are highly engaged in
teaching reading skills at the elementary level. These
teachers, like all others, strive to
meet the FCS goal of having all students reading on or above

integrated learning to assist regular classroom teachers
in reading skills. Together they created a community of
learning through the Whole Faculty Study Group program. To
