Friday Marks Historical Day in Franklin
County
6.9.11 -On Friday, June 10,
2011, the current site of Franklinton High School at 3 North
Main Street in Franklinton will close its doors for the final
time to high school students. The Class of 2011 is also the
last graduating class to go through their entire high school
career on the existing campus. Generations have passed through
the beautiful and historical structure since 1923. The students
and staff of FHS will begin the 2011-12 school year in their
new, state-of-the-art campus at the intersection of Cedar Creek
Road and Lane Store Road in Franklinton. On Sunday, June 5,
FHS welcomed citizens and alumni to tour the existing campus
for one last time as a way to "walk down memory lane." The
school campus had several guests who were able to re-live their
high school days and tell interesting stories about the school
to others in attendance.

new campus, click here.

Don't Let Children Go Hungry This
Summer! Food That's In When School Is Out
6.6.11 -In North Carolina, only
about one out of thirteen children who are eligible for free
or reduced price meals during the school year will get food
they need this summer. When school is out, thousands of children
must search for nutritious meals – and too often, these meals
cannot be found at home. USDA’s Summer Food Service Program
and Seamless Summer Option help bridge the gap by providing
FREE food to children at park and recreation areas, boys and
girls clubs, YMCA, YWCA, and other sites in the community during
the summer.
For information about sites in your neighborhood,
please email jamastallings@fcschools.net or
call (919) 496-5125.

BES Third Graders Become Young Published
Authors
6.3.11 -All of Mrs. Barham's
third grade students at Bunn Elementary School became published
authors recently. Through a website, the students were able
to write their own books and have them published, complete
with an "About the Author Page". Students were able
to work through the whole writing process from writing, editing,
revising, re-writing, and illustrating. While most students
wrote about football, baseball, boat rides, and other interesting
things, one student wrote about something more personal. Hannah
Martin wrote about her little sister, kindergartner Maggie
Martin. Maggie was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September
and has been undergoing chemo and radiation since. Maggie is
doing well, but continues to need everyone's support. Hannah
wanted to do "something" to feel like she was helping,
so Hannah and her teacher decided to sell Hannah's books and
donate the proceeds to The American Cancer Society. Through
this fundraising project, Hannah feels like she is helping
her sister.

BHS Senior Chicken Plate Sale a Piece
of the Puzzle Towards a Successful Senior Trip
4.19.11 -The Senior class at
Bunn High School sold 500 chicken plates to help raise funds
for their annual senior educational trip to the coast of North
Carolina. The only problem was the need for more plates! The
students worked extremely hard on hosting the dinner, along
with the help of BHS faculty and staff. A very large amount
of people from the community stepped up to show their support
for a group of about 100 students who have pledged to spend
their senior year at BHS with great attendance and good behavior.
The school board-approved trip, which spans from the top to
the bottom of the coastal region in a span of five days towards
the end of May, is filled with a multitude of educational opportunities
for these students. They enrich their learning by seeing first-hand
the geographical structure of the region, the history, and
so much more. The students are busy every minute of every day
on the trip! The group of approximately 94 eligible seniors
have worked extremely hard to stay on track to graduate by
not missing more than five school days, and keeping a clean
discipline record. There is no other trip like this for the
students, and they gain a rich knowledge of our coastal region
all at the same time! More highlights regarding this trip will
be available in an upcoming edition of FCS Connections.EDU.
