2008 Adequate Yearly
Progress Results
As part of the No Child
Left Behind Act, each public school in the nation is
required to measure annual progress based on multiple
education targets. A school must meet all of its goals
in each subgroup of children in order to achieve
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
The preliminary results
are in for North Carolina, and 4 of 13 schools in the
Franklin County Schools’ district made AYP. Nine of the
13 schools in the district either met all targets or
missed only one. These results are subject to change
when the reading scores are finalized.
Due to an overhaul on the
reading section of the End-of-Grade test for grades 3-8,
reading scores were not factored in the preliminary AYP
results.

detailed description on AYP, visit the NC Department of
Public Instruction on the Internet click here.
The four schools meeting
the mark this year were Franklinton Elementary School,
Youngsville Elementary School, Royal Elementary School
and Laurel Mill Elementary School.
According to FCS
Superintendent Dr. Bert L’Homme the AYP measurement is
very misleading.
“At first glance, people
may think that our schools are low performing, but this
is far from the truth,” L’Homme said. “It is a
disservice to the community to calculate AYP without
reading scores.
“Regardless, our schools
have shown considerable improvement over the past years.
Our writing scores were up across the board, and we had
strong improvement in our end-of-grade math tests and
end-of-course tests scores for our high schools. We have
more children achieving at or above grade level now than
ever before.”
