Laurel Mill Elementary School Community |
|
Laurel Mill Elementary School is located in a rural and picturesque farm community approximately eight miles northeast of Louisburg, and four miles east of Centerville. It's surrounded by gentle rolling hills, grazing cattle, and tranquil pastureland. The Laurel Mill community receives its name from the old Laurel Mill which was originally built in 1769. The mill was used to grind corn and wheat for many families in Franklin County and surrounding areas. In 1972 the old mill was restored and today serves as an area for fishing, sunbathing, weddings, baptisms, picnics and photography. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has served as a focal point for visitors from all 50 states and 45 foreign countries. The school is located 30 miles from Raleigh, the state capitol, and eight miles from Louisburg College, the oldest two-year college in our nation. It's conveniently located near Franklin Regional Medical Center and two volunteer fire departments: the Gold Sand Fire Department and the Centerville Fire Department. The Laurel Mill community is also home to one of the former state's senators, James D. Speed, who served in the North Carolina Senate for more than 40 years and retired in 1997. |
