LMES AIG Students Enjoy "The Egg
Drop Experiment"
The Egg Drop experiment is a simple example
of how numerous aspects of education and learning all come
together. Simply expressed, what can one do to prevent an
egg from breaking when dropped from a height?
Can you say ‘critical thinking, predictions, investigation,
experimentation, the nature of science, relationships, variables,
motion, force, gravity, and even physics?’ How can such a
simple task (dropping the egg) be connected to so many things,
educational even?
Back to the experiment and what can be done to prevent breakage--will
the strategy be to slow down the natural acceleration (due
to gravity) of the egg as it drops, focus on what type
of cushion material will allow the least impact at the ground,
or both? Physics is the branch of science that refers to
the nature of science in the broadest sense, studying the
behavior and properties of matter. Physics is experimentation--trying
things out.
Students in Jane Riggs' AIG Starquest at Laurel Mill Elementary
had the opportunity to be scientists through taking a problem
(preventing
egg
breakage)
and working
toward a solution including thought processes, experimentation,
results, and drawing conclusions. With the assistance from
custodian Mr. Raymond, students gathered on the playground
ball court to test their egg holding devices. One by one
they were dropped by Mr. Raymond beginning at a height of
five feet. Any student whose egg did not break continued
until there was only one person left. The final dropping
height
was about thirteen feet.
“The whole burden of philosophy seems to consist of this
– from the phenomena of motions to investigate the forces
of nature, and from these forces to explain the other phenomena.”
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727)

Edward Best Students Purchase Goats
for Neighbors in Africa
Students at Edward Best Elementary recently
completed a service learning project to help their neighbors
across
the sea live a better life. After hearing the story, “Beatrice’s
Goat,”
K-5 students decided that they would like to buy a goat for
a family in need. Students were amazed to learn that not
all children have the opportunity to go to school. Some decided
they would like to move, until they discovered that instead
of going to school these children must work from sunup to
sundown to help their family have food and a place to live.
Students were speechless when they saw a DVD about living
conditions in poor countries and were sad to see that children
had no toys with which to play, only a ball made out of garbage
found on the street. During the course of the project, all
kindergarten through fifth grade students helped to earn
money for the goat by reading. For each page read, students
earned a penny from the Media Center toward the funds needed
to buy the goat. It took students only a week and a half
to earn the money. In fact, students earned $250.00, enough
to buy two goats! To celebrate the gift and congratulate
students for a job well done, each grade level had a “Passing
On the Goat Ceremony” that included foods from the region
where the goats will live and traditional music and dancing
as well.
