Friday Update

Labor Day/Hurricane Frances: Here we go again!  Please ensure that your school is prepared for the hurricane.  Outdoor moveable equipment, chairs, etc. that could become missiles during a hurricane should be brought inside.  Computers can be moved away from windows.   Charge the batteries of radios and cell phones.  If the storm does hit Franklin County and it’s over by Monday, check your school Monday afternoon or Monday evening.  Bring emergency numbers home for the weekend.  Should there be a problem, don’t hesitate to call Tommy Piper, Jimmy Floyd or me.  Let’s keep everyone who is in Frances’ path in our thoughts and prayers.

Suspension Form: Attached to this e-mail is the final version of the “new” suspension form.  I want to thank everyone who took the time to review the form and provide feedback.  The form has two pages, the first is the actual suspension form and the second is the referral application for CEC.  Please begin using this form on September 7th.  We will place the form on the network and we will order an “NCR” version of the form for those who have requested them.  Any questions, please call me.

Bond Steering Committee:  The next meeting of the Bond Steering Committee is scheduled for Monday, September 13th, at 5:00 p.m. at the Police Training Center in Louisburg.  I am encouraging principals and PTA/PTO presidents to attend the meeting, especially principals of schools included in the Bond Plan.

The co-chairs of the community committee are Bernard Hall and Ralph Knott.  The co-treasurers are Ronnie Goswick and Fannie Perry.  The committee is officially known as the Committee of 100 Bond Referendum 2004.  Contributions to the campaign are tax deductible and can be mailed to PO Box 218, Louisburg, NC 27549.

WOW: Principals and assistant principals please read Chapter 4, The Principals Role in Working on the Work by Phillip Schlechty.  We will discuss this chapter at our next Principals’ Meeting scheduled for September 15th.

Child Custody Law for School Personnel: Frequently Asked Questions:  Debbie sent you in the mail this article by Cheryl D. PEP:  The following programs are available through the Principals Executive Program in Chapel Hill:  Leadership Program for Assistant Principals: January – April 2005, Leadership Program for New Principals: September – March 2005, Principals as Technology Leaders Program: February – April 2005.  For more information, visit the PEP website at www.ncpep.org and select programs.

K-5 Writing Initiative: All 4th grade teachers in our district participated in a writing professional development on Wednesday, August 31st.  Crystal Williams, teacher at YES, conducted the six hour session on Grammar Adventures and Writer’s Workshop ---both aligned with the NC Writing Assessment.  Each teacher’s evaluation was positive and they left the workshop with strategies and materials that could be incorporated in their instructional program.  Principals---- please share the disk of last year’s student writings with your teachers if you have not already done so.  The disk contains valuable information that teachers can analyze and use to increase student achievement in writing.  In addition, all K-5 teachers should have the new K-5 Writing Plan to use as they plan and execute the district’s writing program.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Dianne Carter or me.

Birthdays: As many of you know, Jane-Waring is still on sick leave.  Jane is responsible for helping with birthday recognitions.  We are looking forward to her speedy recovery and return to work.  We miss her a great dea.
